Urban Furniture Quartett

From urban furniture in Georg Simmel’s time (1858–1918), such as park benches and public mechanical clocks, to rainwater benches, electric charging stations, and dog waste bag dispensers today: urban furniture surrounds us! The positive functions of street furniture, such as indispensable climate adaptation in the local context, ensuring regulated traffic flows, “serving” information, conviviality, or even drinking water, are often overlooked. A city without street furniture would be a bold undertaking, even as a thought experiment.

This “urban furniture quartet” invites interested parties to engage with everyday objects in urban public spaces and acquire knowledge in a playful way. This publication includes explanations of the categories and characteristics of the 36 selected pieces of street furniture, the essay and the DIN A4 DIY print template of the quartet.
