Dissertation

PhD Project: Constructing the City. Negotiating Visions of Built Spaces in Urban Public Spheres on Social Media.

Based on the observation that different vision of how urban spaces should be constructed and used reflect larger societal conflicts – social justice, participation, sustainability – and the assumption that these conflicts will be negotiated informally on social media, the dissertation project looks at such urban public spheres on social media. Although public spheres concepts in communication research traditionally emerged from urban civic contexts, nowadays the city as a public sphere is largely neglected in empirical research. To fill this gap and generate empirical knowledge on actors, content, and processes of urban public spheres on social media, the work employs an issue- and location-centric concept of the public sphere. Theoretically, it is informed by current public spheres research; empirically, it largely employs methods from the field of computational social sciences.
