Exploring Non-Binary Spaces: Screening and Artist Talk with Isu Kim Lee and Joreng Jung
Program
How do spaces perform us, and how do we perform spaces? From patterns of movement to the allocation to specific spots, spaces influence our possibilities of placing ourselves within the social world. Concepts related to our bodies and identities play decisive roles in constituting access to certain spaces—often in combination with customs, laws, technologies, and other social and natural conditions. This becomes particularly clear when non-binary, trans*, and genderqueer individuals navigate everyday environments shaped by cisnormativity.
Building on this observation from the project B03 “Smart People: Queer Everyday Life in Digitalized Spaces” and prior studies, Isu Kim Lee (performance artist, Universität der Künste Berlin), Joreng Jung (sound designer, Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln), and Sung Un Gang (researcher; Technische Universität Berlin) collaborated on an artistic and academic experiment to explore non-binary spaces. We invite you to the screening of two performances dealing with everyday situations that impose cisnormative expectations on bodies and altering their context through movement and sound, followed by an artist talk.
