In this blog post, Simon Pohl and Linda Hering offer insights into their experiences and takeaways from the workshop held in November at the CRC: “Varieties of Refiguration,” organized by Stefan Kirchner and Nina Baur. While Simon plunges into the discussion of how to extend the theory of refiguration, Linda identifies salient throughlines connecting contributions from the wide range of topics presented at the workshop.

How does spatial theory inform spatial practice? What can we, as practitioners, gain from reading a scientific paper? The following lines are a personal reflection on our recent CRC 1265 working paper on multiple understandings of rurality and its links and parallels to the practice of Gyaw Gyaw, a locally-run architectural NGO located at the rural Thai-Myanmar border.

What happens to scalar thinking when the analytical distinctions between global and local as well as human and non-human spaces no longer make sense, especially given the engagement with climate change and the planetary in the social sciences and humanities? These were the challenging questions that PIs Ignacio Farías and Silke Steets posed to the speakers and audience at the 5th international CRC symposium “Spatial Figures in the Anthropocene” on 5th and 6th October 2023. Scholars across regions and disciplines came together for two days of discussions, panels, coffee conversations, a metaverse animation, and a lecture performance to advance, share, and inspire thinking and activities on spatiality that address the anthropogenic impact on Earth.

Working in the CRC challenges us to translate the broad framework of spatial theory into our empirical work. In this blogpost, we illustrate how we handle this challenge in our project.

On the 22nd of November, 2022, Claudia Mock from the Methods-Lab of the CRC 1265 organized the hybrid lecture and workshop “Visualizing Narrative Spaces” with the visual artist Simone Rueß, who shared insights into her work, which deals with the inscription of politics into urban structures, home-making practices and memory processes within biographical narrations, contextualized through drawings, animations, objects and installations. In this blog post, Simone Rueß reflects on the hybrid workshop, which was conceived as a performative narrative in which diverse participants from various disciplines developed individual visual approaches in a collective action.

Am 26./27.02.2020 fand die zweite Internationale Konferenz des SFBs unter dem Titel „Polycontextural Spatial Arrangements“ an der TU Berlin statt. Nina Meier reflektiert in ihrem Bericht die verschiedenen Perspektiven, die sich aus dem Zusammenspiel von Vorträgen, Publikumsfragen und Plenumsdiskussionen ergaben und arbeitet dabei eine Auswahl an Argumentationslinien und offener Fragen mit Blick auf das Thema der „Polykontexturalität“ heraus.
